Applying for jobs in Germany in English
Where English is enough, and when German becomes a requirement.
m3rad editorial team · 6 min read
Not every job in Germany requires German. In software, data and startups in Berlin and Munich, many teams work in English.
How to tell a posting accepts English
If the whole posting is in English, that is a good sign. Look for phrases such as “English is our working language” or “German is a plus”. “Fließend Deutsch” means German is required.
The German CV
Employers in Germany expect a chronological CV without unexplained gaps, with qualifications shown clearly. Cover letters are still more common there than in many other countries.
Visas
We do not help with visas, but many postings mention relocation support. Look for words like “relocation” or “visa sponsorship” in the original posting.
